Executive functions: the brain's orchestra conductor

Executive functions are the cognitive capacities that allow the brain to plan, inhibit impulses, hold information active, and adapt to change. When these don't work well — as in ADHD, ASD or learning disorders — the child isn't "lazy" or "not trying": their internal orchestra conductor doesn't have a well-tuned baton.

Who is affected by executive function difficulties?

  • ADHD: Executive functions are the core cognitive feature of ADHD, especially inhibition and working memory
  • ASD: Difficulties especially in cognitive flexibility (rigidity) and planning
  • Learning disorders: Poor working memory directly impacts reading, maths and reading comprehension
  • Giftedness: Frequent asynchronous profile: very high cognitive abilities with less mature executive functions
  • Anxiety: Anxiety sabotages executive functions, especially working memory

Practical strategies for home and school

For working memory:

  • Brief instructions one at a time — don't chain three commands together
  • Visual schedules, checklists, well-learned fixed routines
  • Repeating aloud what needs to be remembered (externalising memory)

For planning:

  • Breaking tasks into small visual steps (Post-its, flow charts)
  • Visual timers (Time Timer) — the child "sees" time passing
  • Time-blocking: assigning time blocks to specific activities

Frequently asked questions

Yes, significantly. Although partly genetically determined, they are highly plastic throughout childhood and adolescence. Direct training and especially environmental intervention produce real improvements. It's not about "fixing" the brain but equipping the child with tools to compensate.
Not necessarily. The prefrontal cortex matures until ages 25-28. Many children with significant executive difficulties in childhood learn to compensate with strategies and external structures. Early support makes an enormous difference.
