How a neuropsychological assessment is conducted
The process includes: initial interview (anamnesis) with parents about developmental history, assessment sessions with the child (2-5 sessions of 45-90 minutes in a quiet, individual setting), external questionnaires completed by parents and teachers, scoring and interpretation by the neuropsychologist, and report and feedback session explaining results to parents.
Duration and cost of neuropsychological assessment
A complete assessment requires between 6 and 15 hours of professional work. Private sector costs in Spain range from 400 to 1,200€ depending on case complexity. School educational psychology services, CDIATs and specialist CAMHS services offer free assessment with variable waiting times.
Recommendation: Before seeking a private assessment, check whether the school's educational psychology service can conduct one through the school circuit — often at no cost.

Assessment protocols exist from age 2-3 years. There is no absolute minimum age: the assessment adapts to the child's age. In very young children, instruments are more observational. The early intervention service (0-6 years) is the entry point for early detection and assessment.
Tell them they're going to see a professional who will do games and ask questions to better understand how their brain works. Don't say it will "go really well" (creates pressure) or "it's not important". The goal is for them to arrive rested, unpressured, without feeling they're being examined to find out "what's wrong with them".
