When a child "explodes", their amygdala has "hijacked" prefrontal control. In this state, the child cannot reason, learn from consequences, or apply any strategy.
Practical implication: Reasoning with a child in the middle of a meltdown is ineffective. Not because they don't want to listen, but because their prefrontal cortex literally cannot process what we say.
Who has greater difficulties with emotional regulation?
- ADHD: Emotional dysregulation is a core feature of ADHD. 70-80% of children with ADHD have significant difficulties: emotional hyperreactivity and slow recovery.
- ASD: Difficulties identifying, understanding and expressing own emotions (alexithymia in ~50% of ASD) and tolerating frustration and unexpected changes.
- Atypical sensory processing: A hypersensitive nervous system generates intense emotional responses to small stimuli.
- Childhood anxiety: Keeps the nervous system on high alert, lowering the threshold for dysregulation.
Co-regulation and self-regulation strategies
Co-regulation (what the adult does):
- Calm presence: the child's nervous system automatically orients to the adult's
- Calm, soft, slow voice — never shout during a meltdown
- Short validation phrases: "I can see, it's really hard", "I'm here"
Self-regulation (tools for the child):
- Calm corner at home and school (not a punishment)
- Emotion thermometer: learning to identify early signals of frustration (0 to 10)
- Regulating physical activity: jumping, running, squeezing — intense proprioceptive movement
Frequently asked questions
It depends on age, intensity and frequency. If explosions are very frequent, very intense or cause significant problems at home or school, an evaluation is worthwhile to rule out contributing conditions (ADHD, ASD, anxiety, atypical sensory processing).
It's not the best moment. During a meltdown, the child's brain cannot process or learn from consequences. Limits and behaviour conversations are more effective in calm phases, hours after the episode.
